Hongdae is free and open at all hours: Seoul’s student, street-music and nightlife district around Hongik Univ. Station (Line 2, AREX, Gyeongui-Jungang Line). Use Exit 9 for the main streets. Come from late afternoon into the evening, best Friday to Sunday when the main walking street is car-free and buskers draw the biggest crowds.

Hongdae takes its name from Hongik University (Hongik Daehakgyo) and covers the streets of Seogyo-dong, Donggyo-dong, Hapjeong and Sangsu in Mapo-gu, in the west of Seoul. It is where Seoul’s indie music and club scene grew up, and today it mixes street performers, live-music bars and clubs with budget fashion, character and K-pop shops, themed cafes and cheap places to eat. Allow two to three hours for a walk and a meal, or a whole evening if you are going out.

Is Hongdae worth it?

You want… Hongdae? Better choice
Street performers, a young crowd and a lively evening Yes, this is the main reason to go –
Clubs and late bars Yes, the club street is the busiest part of the area after midnight Itaewon for an international bar scene
Budget fashion, character goods and K-pop merchandise Yes Myeongdong for cosmetics and big brands
Quiet cafes and small independent shops Partly; walk north into Yeonnam-dong Seongsu-dong for warehouse cafes and pop-ups
Palaces and history No Gyeongbokgung and Insadong
A cheap base with a direct train to Incheon Airport Yes Hotels in Korea compares Seoul’s other bases

Based on Visit Seoul and Korea Tourism Organization descriptions, checked 18 October 2026. If you only have one free evening in Seoul and want a crowd and live music, Hongdae is the easiest choice. If you want to shop for cosmetics or see the old city, go elsewhere by day and come here at night.

When to go

  • Friday to Sunday, late afternoon to night is peak Hongdae. The main pedestrian street (Hongdae Walking Street, 걷고싶은거리) is closed to cars from Friday to Sunday, and buskers perform from the afternoon with the biggest audiences after dark.
  • Weekday afternoons are calmer for shopping and cafes. On weekdays cars still use the red-painted road, so keep to the side.
  • Late night belongs to the club street and bars. Plan how you will get back: on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays the subway stops before midnight, so check the last train in the Seoul subway guide or budget for a taxi.
  • Mornings are quiet, and many shops and cafes open later in the day.
  • Halloween weekend is one of the busiest times of the year. Seoul city counted Hongdae among the 14 crowd hot spots it managed around Halloween 2025, with police, district staff and crowd monitoring on the streets. Expect fences, one-way walking and possibly one-way station exits.

Getting there

Hongdae’s station, Hongik Univ. (홍대입구), is served by three lines: Subway Line 2 (the green circle line), the AREX airport railway and the Gyeongui-Jungang Line.

Exit Leads to
Exit 9 The main shopping, busking and club streets towards Hongik University
Exit 7 Red Road start (R1) and the former Gyeongui Line Book Street, now the Red Road Power Plant
Exit 3 North to Yeonnam-dong and the Gyeongui Line Forest Park

Exits from Visit Seoul, the Korea Tourism Organization’s Korean listing and Seoul Media Hub, checked 18 October 2026. Exit 9 is the classic meeting point and gets very crowded on weekend evenings.

From Incheon Airport: take the AREX all-stop train (일반열차), which runs to Hongik Univ. Station without a change. With a T-money or other transport card the fare is ₩4,650 from Terminal 1 and ₩5,250 from Terminal 2. A single-journey card costs ₩100 more plus a refundable ₩500 deposit. The faster AREX Express runs non-stop between the airport and Seoul Station only, so it does not stop at Hongdae. AREX timetables change from 23 October 2026; check departure times on the day.

From central Seoul: Line 2 runs straight to Hongik Univ. from City Hall, Euljiro and Gangnam. From Seoul Station, AREX all-stop trains reach Hongik Univ. in two stops. A T-money card pays every fare.

What you find there

  • The Red Road. In 2023 Mapo-gu joined the area’s main streets into one roughly 2 km route painted red, the Red Road, running from the Gyeongui Line Forest Park through Hongdae to the old Danginri power plant near the Han River. It is split into sections R1 to R7, each with its own character (performances, fashion, food), and walking from R1 to R7 takes about 25 minutes. R1, closest to Exit 7, has large street-art paintings on the ground.
  • Busking. Hongdae is Seoul’s best-known busking spot, with dance crews, bands and singers performing all year. Performances are allowed only in designated busking spots, mostly along Hongdae Walking Street, where the busking zone runs down one side and plaza stages and seating line the other. Stand clear of the walkway so people can pass.
  • The club street and live-music bars. The clubs and late bars cluster along the club street, which runs on towards Sangsu Station. Bring your passport: clubs check ID at the door.
  • Shopping. Budget clothing, accessories, character and K-pop goods, stationery and design shops fill the main streets. KT&G Sangsangmadang, a cultural complex on Eoulmadang-ro, has shops, a gallery and a cafe over three floors.
  • Weekend art markets. Local artists sell handmade work at the Hongdae Free Market (홍대앞 예술시장 프리마켓) in Hongik Children’s Park, opposite the university’s main gate, on Saturdays, and at the Hope Market (희망시장) on Sundays. Hours and seasons vary, so check before going specially.
  • Yeonnam-dong and the Gyeongui Line Forest Park. North of Exit 3, a disused railway line has become a long, narrow park (6.3 km in total, of which the Yeonnam stretch is the busiest), lined with cafes, small restaurants and independent shops. It is the calmer side of Hongdae.
  • Red Road Power Plant. Near Exit 7, the stretch that was once Gyeongui Line Book Street was remodelled into a small arts space with makers’ studios, a gallery and photo spots.
  • Murals. A mural street runs along Wausan-ro 22-gil by the university’s back gate.

Tips for visiting

  • Pick the right exit. Exit 9 for the main streets, Exit 3 for Yeonnam-dong, Exit 7 for the Red Road start. In a crowd, agree a meeting point that is not Exit 9.
  • Ask a walking guide. Visit Seoul lists roaming tourist guides in red uniforms in the Hongdae area from 10:00 to 19:00, speaking English, Chinese and Japanese.
  • Watch the last train. Line 2 runs until about 01:00 on weekdays but stops before midnight on weekends and holidays. Night buses and taxis are the fallback; nightlife in Korea lists owl-bus times and the taxi surcharge, and compares Hongdae with Itaewon and Euljiro.
  • Mind the road on weekdays. The red road surface is not a pedestrian-only zone from Monday to Thursday.
  • Use a map app. Naver Map or KakaoMap shows shops, venues and walking routes in English and Korean; business hours change often.
  • Stay overnight. Hongdae has many guesthouses and mid-range hotels and a direct train to Incheon Airport. Expect late-night noise near the club street. See hotels in Korea for how to choose.
  • Combine it with the river. The far end of the Red Road (R7) leads towards the Han River at Danginri. Mangwon Market, a neighbourhood market known for snacks, is a short ride away.

History in brief

Hongik University is known above all for its art school, and the streets around it filled with artists’ studios, rehearsal rooms and small live venues. Seoul’s Media Hub notes that old warehouses near the former Gyeongui Line rail crossing were practice spaces for the first generation of Korean indie bands, and Hongdae is still seen as the home of Korea’s indie culture. The Saturday Free Market, where independent makers sell their own work, dates back to June 2002.

In December 2021 the area was designated the Hongdae Culture and Arts Special Tourist Zone, about 1.13 km² across Seogyo-dong, Donggyo-dong, Hapjeong-dong and Sangsu-dong. In 2023 Mapo-gu repainted and rebranded the main streets as the Red Road, partly to guide crowds and improve safety. A 3-day Seoul itinerary ends here on the last evening. Frequently asked questions

Which subway exit is best for Hongdae?

Use Exit 9 of Hongik Univ. Station for the main shopping and busking streets. Exit 7 is closest to the start of the Red Road (R1) and the AREX and Gyeongui-Jungang platforms, and Exit 3 leads north to Yeonnam-dong and the Gyeongui Line Forest Park.

When is the best time to visit Hongdae?

Late afternoon into the evening, ideally Friday to Sunday. Buskers draw the biggest crowds after dark, and the main walking street is car-free from Friday to Sunday. Weekday afternoons are calmer for shopping and cafes; the club street only gets going late at night.

How do I get from Incheon Airport to Hongdae?

Take the AREX all-stop train, which runs straight to Hongik Univ. Station with no change: ₩4,650 from Terminal 1 or ₩5,250 from Terminal 2 with a T-money card. The faster AREX Express goes non-stop to Seoul Station and does not stop at Hongdae.

Is Hongdae a good area to stay in Seoul?

Yes for budget travellers, nightlife and anyone flying in or out of Incheon, thanks to the direct AREX train and plenty of guesthouses. It is noisy late at night and further from the palaces than central bases, so light sleepers may prefer Jongno or Myeongdong.

Is Hongdae busy at Halloween?

Yes. The weekend before Halloween is one of the most crowded times of the year. Seoul city and Mapo-gu run special crowd-safety operations in Hongdae with police and staff on the streets, and some station exits may be one-way. Go early or pick another night if you dislike crowds.
