Busan in 2 Days: A First-Visit Itinerary

Updated

Two days in Busan: spend day one in the old harbour (Gamcheon, Jagalchi and the Nampo markets) and day two on the east coast (Haedong Yonggungsa, the Blueline beach train, Haeundae and Gwangalli). Do day one between Wednesday and Friday and day two on a Saturday. That way you miss the Tuesday and Sunday market closings and finish at Gwangalli’s free 19:00 or 21:00 drone show. Facts checked 27 October 2026.

Day Area Main sights Getting around Watch for
1 West: old Busan Gamcheon, Jagalchi, Gukje Market, Huinnyeoul Metro Line 1, village bus, city bus Jagalchi closed 1st/3rd/5th Tuesday; Gukje Sundays
2 East coast Haedong Yonggungsa, Blueline Park, Haeundae, Dongbaekseom, Gwangalli Metro Line 2, Donghae Line, bus Drone show Saturdays only; Nurimaru closed 1st Monday

The two halves of Busan are far apart, and crossing from Nampo to Haeundae by metro is a long ride with a change, so each day stays on one side of the city. Swap the days if your Saturday falls first. Inside each day, keep the order: the hill villages and the temple are best in daylight, and Gwangalli is best after dark.

Which days of the week work best?

Closing days decide the order more than anything else. The table shows what is affected on each day of the week.

Day of the week What is affected
Monday Taejongdae shuttle off; Nurimaru APEC House closed on the 1st Monday
Tuesday Taejongdae shuttle off; Jagalchi main building closed on the 1st, 3rd and 5th Tuesday
Wednesday–Friday No regular closings on this route
Saturday Gwangalli drone show at 19:00 and 21:00 (October–February); busiest day everywhere
Sunday Gukje Market closed (1st and 3rd Sunday per the district; every Sunday per Busan’s tourism site)

Arriving on a Monday or Tuesday? Do the east coast first. Haedong Yonggungsa, Blueline Park, Haeundae and Dongbaekseom are open every day; only Nurimaru closes on the first Monday.

Day 1: Gamcheon, Jagalchi and old Busan

Start at Gamcheon Culture Village, the hillside of painted houses above the harbour. It is free. Take Line 1 to Toseong (Exit 6) and a short village-bus ride up; the information centre opens at 09:00. Since August 2026 the residential alleys have visitor hours under a pilot scheme (09:00–18:00), so don’t plan an evening visit.

Come down to Jagalchi Market for lunch. It is Busan’s best-known fish market: choose seafood on the ground floor and have it cooked at the restaurants upstairs, which add their own table charge. The market building is closed on the 1st, 3rd and 5th Tuesday of each month.

The afternoon is on foot. Gukje Market and BIFF Square are a few minutes north of Jagalchi, with street snacks such as ssiat hotteok (seed-filled pancakes) along the way. Then cross Yeongdo Bridge by bus to Huinnyeoul Culture Village, a lane of white houses on a sea cliff, for the late-afternoon light over the anchored ships.

Taejongdae: the Wednesday-to-Sunday swap

Taejongdae, the cliff park at the tip of Yeongdo, can replace Huinnyeoul if you have the energy. The Danubi road train that used to circle the park is suspended for safety checks. In its place, Busan Tourism Organization runs a free shuttle bus, Wednesday to Sunday, 09:30–17:30. Tickets for each run are handed out from 09:10 and can run out at weekends. On a Monday or Tuesday the paved loop road is a walk of about 4.3 km with hills, and from about 20:00 the shore areas close for military operations.

Day 2: Haedong Yonggungsa to Gwangalli

Start early at Haedong Yonggungsa, the temple built on rocks above the sea. It opens at 04:30 every day and is free, and Sunrise Rock beside it faces east across the open sea, so an early start beats the midday crowds of a famous sight. From Osiria Station on the Donghae Line, bus 139 or 1001 drops you about 15 minutes’ walk from the gate.

Head south to Songjeong and ride Haeundae Blueline Park back towards Haeundae. Two rides run along the old coastal railway:

Ride Route Time Adult fare Hours (Nov–Feb)
Beach Train Songjeong ↔ Mipo, 4.8 km About 25 min one way ₩10,000 one ride from an end station; ₩16,000 all stops 09:00–19:00
Sky Capsule Cheongsapo ↔ Mipo About 30 min one way ₩50,000 per car for 2, ₩60,000 for 4 08:30–18:00

The Beach Train is the one most first-timers take. You need a return or all-stops ticket if you want to ride back. Discounted on-site tickets are for the same day only and can sell out. In October the train runs until 19:30.

Mipo is at the east end of Haeundae Beach. Walk the sand west to Dongbaekseom, where a free coastal path loops past the mermaid statue and Nurimaru APEC House, the venue of the 2005 APEC summit (open 09:00–18:00, free, closed on the first Monday of the month).

Finish at Gwangalli Beach on Line 2 for dinner with a view of Gwangan Bridge lit up. On Saturdays the drone light show fills the sky over the bridge at 19:00 and 21:00 until February. It is free, needs no ticket and lasts about 12 minutes. Rain, strong wind or signal problems can cancel it at short notice; the nightlife guide covers what else is open late.

Where to stay for two nights

Base Good for Getting to day 1 / day 2
Seomyeon Short stays, budget, nightlife Lines 1 and 2 cross here, so both halves are a direct ride
Haeundae Beach, families, first-timers Day 2 on your doorstep; day 1 is a long metro ride
Nampo / Busan Station Arriving and leaving by KTX Day 1 on foot; day 2 a long ride east

Seomyeon is the neutral choice for this route. If you arrive by KTX from Seoul (about 2.5 hours to Busan Station, next to Line 1), Nampo is about 10 minutes away on Line 1. See hotels by area in Busan for booking.

Getting around Busan in two days

  • One card for everything: a T-money card works on Busan’s metro, buses and the airport light rail.
  • Line 1 links Busan Station, Nampo, Jagalchi and Toseong (day 1). Line 2 runs along the coast through Gwangan and Haeundae (day 2). The Donghae Line continues north-east to Osiria for the temple.
  • Taxis fill the gaps on day 2, such as temple → Songjeong, and are much faster than changing buses.
  • Arriving by air? Gimhae Airport’s light rail meets Line 2 at Sasang. Busan also works as the end of a longer trip: it is days 5–7 of Korea in 7 days.

What to book ahead

Very little on this route needs a booking. The Blueline Park Sky Capsule has limited cars, so buy ahead online if you want a set time; the Beach Train can be bought on the day. Book KTX seats to and from Busan in advance for Friday to Sunday travel; see how to book the KTX.

Frequently asked questions

Is two days enough for Busan?

Two days covers the two halves first-timers come for: the old harbour (Gamcheon, Jagalchi, the Nampo markets) and the east coast (Haedong Yonggungsa, the beach train, Haeundae and Gwangalli). Add a third day for Taejongdae, Songdo or a slower beach day.

Which day of the week is best for Busan?

Do the old-town day from Wednesday to Friday and the east-coast day on a Saturday. That avoids Jagalchi's Tuesday closings, Gukje Market's Sunday closings and the Taejongdae shuttle's Monday–Tuesday break, and ends day two at Gwangalli's Saturday drone show.

When is the Gwangalli drone show?

Every Saturday, about 12 minutes each time: 19:00 and 21:00 from October to February, 20:00 and 22:00 from March to September. It is free and visible from anywhere on the beach. Rain, strong wind or signal problems can cancel it the day before or on the day, so check the official notices.

Where should I stay for two days in Busan?

Seomyeon, where metro Lines 1 and 2 cross, sits between the two halves of this route. Choose Haeundae for the beach, or Nampo or the Busan Station area if you arrive and leave by KTX. See where to stay in Busan.

Do I need a different transit card in Busan?

No. The same transit card works on Busan's metro, city buses and the airport light rail, so a T-money card from Seoul is fine. Seoul's Climate Card does not work in Busan.
