Jeju in 3 Days: A First-Visit Itinerary

Updated

Three days on Jeju: give each day to one side of the island — the volcanic east (Seongsan Ilchulbong, Udo, Manjanggul), the waterfall coast around Seogwipo, then the tea fields and beaches of the west. Rent a car if you can; by bus the plan still works with two bases. Keep the east off the first Monday and first Wednesday of the month, when Seongsan and Manjanggul close. Facts checked 27 October 2026.

Day Area Main sights Sleep Watch for
1 East Seongsan Ilchulbong, Udo, Manjanggul, Dongmun Market Jeju City (or Seongsan) Seongsan closed 1st Monday; Manjanggul 1st Wednesday; last Udo boat 17:00 in winter
2 South Jeongbang Falls, Olle Route 7, Jusangjeolli, Cheonjiyeon at night Seogwipo Falls and cliff close 17:50; Cheonjiyeon open to 22:00
3 West O’sulloc Tea Museum, Hyeopjae Beach, Iho Tewoo Jeju City or fly out Beaches are for walking outside June–September

Jeju is about 70 km from west to east, so moving round the island in one direction saves hours of backtracking. The order above suits a flight in early on day 1 and out in the evening of day 3. If your first day lands on a closing day, swap days 1 and 3.

Car or bus: which works for this route?

This is the one decision that shapes the trip. Island buses reach every stop here, but rural routes can be infrequent, and the east is where that hurts most.

By rental car By bus
Day 1 (east) Sunrise at Seongsan, Udo and Manjanggul all fit Express 101 to Seongsan takes about 70 min from the airport; pick Udo or Manjanggul, or sleep in Seongsan
Day 2 (south) Easy; parking at every stop Easy; Seogwipo town buses and the airport limousine 600 cover it
Day 3 (west) Easy Express 151 to O’sulloc, bus 202 or express 102 to Hyeopjae
Paperwork International Driving Permit plus your licence and passport A T-money card works on Jeju buses

Foreign drivers need an International Driving Permit, which you must get at home before the trip. If you won’t drive, a car with a driver or a day tour for the east is the easy fix; buses are fine for days 2 and 3.

Which days of the week work best?

The south and west stops on this route have no regular closing day, so the calendar only matters for day 1.

Date What is closed
First Monday of each month (2 Nov, 7 Dec 2026; 4 Jan 2027) Seongsan Ilchulbong
First Wednesday of each month (4 Nov, 2 Dec 2026; 6 Jan 2027) Manjanggul Lava Tube
Typhoon, gale warning or fog Udo ferries

On a first Monday, do the south or west that day and the east the next. Udo ferries are the one thing you can’t plan around in advance: call the Seongsan terminal or check the operator’s site on the morning.

Day 1: Seongsan Ilchulbong, Udo and Manjanggul

Start at Seongsan Ilchulbong, the tuff cone that rises from the sea at the island’s eastern tip. The heritage office sets the gates to open early enough to reach the rim before sunrise: 06:00 from November to February, 05:00 in spring and autumn, 04:30 in summer. Adults pay ₩5,000, and food may not be taken up. The shore path to Umutgae at the base is free.

Walk down to Seongsan Port for Udo, the small island 15 minutes offshore. Boats leave every 30 minutes from 08:00 and the adult return fare is ₩11,000, the park fee included. Tickets are sold only at the terminal, on the day. Visit Jeju suggests 3–4 hours for one or two of the beaches and the Udobong headland.

Back on the main island, drive about 24 minutes north-west to Manjanggul, part of the UNESCO-listed lava tube system. It reopened on 30 May 2026 after more than two years shut: about 1 km of the 7.4 km tube is open on a level walkway, ending at a tall lava column. Tickets stop at 17:00, so if Udo runs late, go to Manjanggul first and Udo second. By bus, 201 runs along the coast road to the Manjanggul Entrance stop, then it is the 711 feeder bus or about 30 minutes uphill on foot.

End in Jeju City at Dongmun Market. Its night market near Gate 8 opens at 18:00 from November to April (19:00 in summer) and runs to midnight. Expect tangerines, seafood and street snacks.

Day 2: Seogwipo’s waterfalls and the Olle Trail

Move south to Seogwipo for the night. The airport limousine 600 links the airport, Jungmun and Seogwipo, so luggage is not a problem even without a car.

Start at Jeongbang Falls, where the water drops straight onto a rocky shore, a five-minute stairway below the ticket office (adults ₩2,000). From there walk the first part of Olle Route 7, the best-known course on the island’s long-distance trail. It starts at the Jeju Olle Tourist Center in Seogwipo, passes the 20 m Oedolgae sea stack and a cliff path cut by hand, and reaches Beophwan port, a good place for lunch before a bus back. The whole course is 12.9 km and 3–4 hours.

In the afternoon head west to Jusangjeolli Cliff near Jungmun, where hexagonal basalt columns line the shore. It closes at 17:50 (last entry 17:30), and earlier in the day if the weather is bad.

After dinner, walk into Cheonjiyeon Falls, which stays open until 22:00 (last entry 21:20) and is lit after dark. The path through the gorge is flat and takes 30–60 minutes there and back.

Stop Adult ticket Last entry
Jeongbang Falls ₩2,000 17:30
Jusangjeolli Cliff ₩2,000 17:30
Cheonjiyeon Falls ₩2,000 21:20

All three are run by Seogwipo City with the same ticket prices. Visitors 65 and over and children 6 and under go free with proof of age.

Day 3: Tea fields and the west coast

Drive or take express bus 151 to the O’sulloc Tea Museum, a free museum and cafe in the middle of green tea fields, open every day 09:00–18:00. The green tea desserts are the draw; outside food and drink are not allowed.

Continue to Hyeopjae Beach on the west coast, known for its bright turquoise shallows and the flat island of Biyangdo offshore. Lifeguards are only on duty in summer (24 June–6 September in 2026), so from autumn to spring it is a beach for walking and photos.

Work back towards the airport along the coast and finish at Iho Tewoo Beach, the closest beach to the airport, where two horse-shaped lighthouses stand on the breakwater. Sunset there is a good end to the trip before an evening flight.

Swaps for rain, Hallasan or a slower trip

  • Rain: Manjanggul is underground and the O’sulloc museum is indoors. Skip Udo and the Olle walk; Cheonjiyeon’s gorge path is fine in light rain.
  • Udo ferries cancelled: spend the extra time at Hamdeok Beach, east of Jeju City on the way back.
  • Add Hallasan: make it a fourth day. Summit trails need a free booking on the official reservation site, opened monthly for the next month. From October to March the last entry to the summit trails is 11:30. Without a booking, the Yeongsil and Eorimok trails need none. Details on the Hallasan page.
  • Two days only: do day 1 and day 2, then fly out from Jeju City.

Where to stay

Base Nights Why
Jeju City / Nohyeong 1 and 3 Close to the airport, Dongmun Market and the most bus routes
Seogwipo 2 Walk to Cheonjiyeon, Jeongbang and the start of Olle Route 7
Seongsan 1 (instead of Jeju City) Sunrise at the cone without a long early drive, useful by bus

If you’d rather unpack once, stay in Jeju City for all three nights and drive, accepting longer days on day 2. Compare areas in where to stay on Jeju.

Getting to Jeju and costs

Nearly everyone flies. From Seoul Gimpo the scheduled flight is about 75 minutes, and nine Korean airlines fly the route; see domestic flights in Korea for fares, baggage and passport ID. Busan Gimhae is about an hour away. Jeju also works as the last stretch of a longer trip: it is days 7–9 of Korea in 10 days.

Entry ticket (adult) Price
Seongsan Ilchulbong ₩5,000
Udo ferry, return incl. park fee ₩11,000
Manjanggul Lava Tube ₩4,000
Jeongbang Falls, Jusangjeolli Cliff, Cheonjiyeon Falls ₩2,000 each
O’sulloc Tea Museum, beaches, Dongmun Market Free
Total for the route ₩26,000

Entry fees are small; the real costs are the flight, the car and fuel, and meals. Book flights and rental cars early for weekends and Korean holidays.

What to book ahead

  • Flights to and from Jeju, especially Friday to Sunday.
  • A rental car with pick-up at Jeju Airport, plus your International Driving Permit before you leave home.
  • Hallasan summit slot if you add the hike: it opens on the first working day of the previous month.

Nothing else on this route takes bookings: the Udo ferry, the heritage sites and the waterfalls all sell tickets on the day.

Frequently asked questions

Is three days enough for Jeju?

Three days covers the island's three halves that first-timers come for: the volcanic east (Seongsan Ilchulbong, Udo, Manjanggul), the waterfall coast around Seogwipo, and the tea fields and beaches of the west. Add a fourth day to hike Hallasan or to slow down.

Do I need a car for three days on Jeju?

Not strictly, but it helps most on day 1. A car lets you reach Seongsan Ilchulbong for sunrise and fit Udo and Manjanggul into one day. By bus the same plan works if you sleep in Seongsan or skip one eastern stop. Foreign drivers need an International Driving Permit, and most rental cars cannot go on the Udo ferry.

Which days of the week should I avoid?

Don't put the east on the first Monday of the month (Seongsan Ilchulbong closed) or the first Wednesday (Manjanggul closed). In late 2026 that means 2 November, 4 November, 2 December and 7 December. The south and west stops on this route have no regular closing day.

What if it rains or the Udo ferry is cancelled?

Ferries stop in typhoons, gale warnings and fog. Swap Udo for more time in Manjanggul, which is underground, or for Hamdeok Beach on the way back to Jeju City. On a wet west-coast day, the O'sulloc Tea Museum is indoors.

Where should I stay for three days on Jeju?

Split the nights: Jeju City (or Seongsan) for day 1, Seogwipo for day 2, and Jeju City again if you fly out late on day 3. If you only want one hotel, Jeju City is closest to the airport and the bus network. See where to stay on Jeju.
