Cheonjiyeon Falls costs ₩2,000 for adults and is open every day 09:00–22:00, with last entry at 21:20. A level path leads through a subtropical forest gorge in central Seogwipo to a 22 m waterfall, lit after dark. Allow 30–60 minutes. Town buses stop at the entrance.

The name means “pond where heaven and earth meet”. It is the largest and best-known of Seogwipo’s waterfalls, and with Jeongbang and Cheonjeyeon one of Jeju’s three famous falls. The gorge holds three Natural Monuments: a stand of elaeocarpus trees, the subtropical forest itself and the pool, a habitat of the giant mottled eel.

Is Cheonjiyeon Falls worth it?

Go if you are staying in Seogwipo or passing along the south coast. It is the easiest of Jeju’s big waterfalls to reach: no stairs, a short walk and a bus stop at the gate. It is also one of the few sights on the island still open after dinner. Skip it only if you have already seen Jeongbang and are short of time; both are waterfalls, but the settings differ.

Visiting at night

The site stays open until 22:00, and the falls are lit once the sun goes down. That makes Cheonjiyeon a good use of an evening in Seogwipo, after the day’s sightseeing and dinner. Arrive by 21:20, when the ticket office stops admitting visitors. The giant mottled eels in the pool are mostly active at night.

What you see at the falls

  • The walk in. A paved basalt path runs from the ticket office along the gorge, under evergreen trees such as Japanese chinquapin and camellia. Visit Jeju notes it stays cool even in midsummer.
  • The falls. A single white column drops 22 m from a cliff of dark rock. The falls are 12 m wide, and Visit Jeju puts the pool below at about 20 m deep.
  • Protected nature. The elaeocarpus trees here are at the northern limit of their range (Natural Monument No. 163), and the forest is protected as No. 379. Logging, collecting plants and catching animals are banned.
  • The eels. The pool is a habitat of the giant mottled eel (Natural Monument No. 27), a migratory fish that can reach 2 m.

The falls are part of the Jeju UNESCO Global Geopark and lie on Jeju Olle Trail Route 6. By the entrance are a car park, toilets, a convenience store, restaurants and a souvenir shop.

Routes from Seogwipo City’s e-ticket page and stop orders from the Jeju Bus Information System, checked 23 October 2026. Walking distances from the harbour stop and Jungang Rotary are straight-line figures from the official stop coordinates; the real route is a little longer. The limousine leaves from its own 600 stop at the airport, not the express-bus stops. A T-money card works on island buses.

By car, use the car park by the ticket office, which takes about 230 cars and buses.

Tips

  • Go after dark if you can. The site is open until 22:00, so do daylight sights such as Jeongbang (last entry 17:30) first and Cheonjiyeon last.

  • Bring proof of age. Entry is free at 65 and over, and for children 6 and under, with ID such as a passport.
  • Step-free. Visit Jeju lists the path as without steps and says manual wheelchairs can be borrowed on site.
  • Pets. Visit Jeju lists Cheonjiyeon as pet-friendly; phone 064-733-1528 to check before you go.
