Yeosu 여수

Yeosu is worth one night if you stay for the evening: harbour lights, the sea cable car (₩17,000 return) and the Romantic Pojangmacha stalls from 18:00. The KTX from Yongsan takes about 3 hours, and Odongdo island and the Expo waterfront near the station are free.

Is Yeosu worth it?

Yeosu, a port city of about 260,000 people at the end of the Jeolla KTX line, is the main sea destination of Korea’s south-west coast. It hosted the 2012 World Expo, which drew 8.2 million visitors, and is known across Korea for a pop song about its night sea. The best of it is the waterfront after dark, so plan to stay at least one night.

Your situation Do this
One night from Seoul Odongdo by day, the cable car at dusk, then the Romantic Pojangmacha
You like sunrises Take an early bus or a taxi to Hyangiram before dawn
Only a day trip Odongdo and Yi Sun-sin Square; you miss the night views that make Yeosu
Two nights Add a ferry to Geumodo for one section of the Bireong-gil cliff trail
Combining with Jeonju Use the same KTX line: Jeonju one night, Yeosu the next
Here before 4 November 2026 The World Island Expo is on; Dolsan buses are free and weekends are busy

Facts checked 25 October 2026. Hotels fill up at weekends in spring, summer and autumn: the city’s own peak seasons are 1 April to 30 May, 15 July to 20 August and 1 September to 30 October.

Odongdo and the Expo waterfront

Odongdo is a small island joined to the shore by a seawall, about 15 minutes on foot from the car park at its land end. It is part of Hallyeohaesang National Park and is covered in dense evergreen forest, with more than 3,000 camellia trees that flower from February and peak in March. Paths circle the island past sea cliffs and a 25 m lighthouse, first lit in 1952. Entry is free all year.

If you don’t want to walk, the little Dongbaek train runs along the seawall for ₩1,000 each way, or ₩500 for ages 7–19 and over-65s. It does not run in heavy rain or between 12:00 and 13:00.

Season Last train to the island Last train back
March to October 17:50 17:40
November to February 17:00 16:45

From the Yeosu tourism site, checked 25 October 2026. Plan to be off the island by late afternoon in winter, or walk back along the seawall.

The Expo grounds next to the station are free to walk. The Sky Tower viewpoint costs ₩3,000 for adults. In the evening, the Big-O show of fountains, lights and lasers plays at the ring in the sea. The 2026 season runs to 8 November, Wednesday to Sunday at 20:00, for about 30 minutes, and is cancelled in rain or strong wind.

The cable car and Dolsan

The Yeosu Maritime Cable Car crosses 1.5 km of harbour between Jasan Park, near Odongdo, and Dolsan Park on Dolsan Island. Tickets are sold at the stations only, with no reservation.

Cabin Adult return Adult one way Child return
Standard ₩17,000 ₩14,000 ₩12,000
Crystal (glass floor) ₩24,000 ₩19,000 ₩19,000

Operator fares, checked 25 October 2026. Go late in the afternoon so the return ride is in the dark. Opening hours change by the day and are posted on the operator’s site. On 11 and 25 November 2026 the cable car opens only at 14:00 for safety checks.

At the Dolsan end, free Dolsan Park looks down on the harbour and the lit Dolsan Bridge. Dolsan itself is a large island of fishing villages, beaches and hillside fields. The mustard greens for Dolsan’s famous gat kimchi grow there.

Hyangiram: the cliff-side hermitage

Hyangiram is a small Buddhist hermitage at the southern tip of Dolsan, set among huge boulders on a cliff above the open sea. Its name means “hermitage facing the sun”, and Koreans come for the sunrise, above all on New Year’s Day. Entry is free.

From the bus stop and car park, a steep stone stairway climbs to the temple. The city describes the slope as close to 40 degrees. Near the top the path squeezes through narrow gaps in the rocks. The city’s own tour bus allows 75 minutes there; wear good shoes.

The Hyangiram Sunrise Festival runs overnight on 31 December and 1 January, with a bell-ringing and fireworks after midnight. The 2025–26 edition saw sunrise at 07:36. The 2026–27 dates had not been announced when this page was checked. For other temples in the region, see temples in Korea.

Yeosu at night: the harbour, pojangmacha and cruises

The Jongpo Marine Park promenade runs 1.5 km along the old harbour. It is free, and with the lit bridges it is the place for Yeosu’s night-sea view. The small Hamel Lighthouse stands at its end beside Geobukseon Bridge.

Under the bridge, the Romantic Pojangmacha is a row of about 18 tent bars serving seafood with soju from 18:00 until late. Cards are accepted. It closes on the first Wednesday of the month outside the busy months, and when the weather is bad. Arrive early at weekends, when every table fills.

Close by, Yi Sun-sin Square remembers the admiral whose navy was based here in the 1590s. A short climb above it stands Jinnamgwan, a vast wooden hall of the Joseon naval headquarters and a National Treasure. It reopened in 2025 after a ten-year restoration; the city tourism site lists entry as free.

Harbour cruise operators sail from the waterfront by day and at night. Some Friday-to-Sunday evening sailings include fireworks. For a slower look at the city, the painted lanes of Gosodong Angel Mural Village climb the hill behind the harbour.

Getting there and around

The KTX runs from Yongsan to Yeosu Expo Station in about 2 h 50 min to 3 h 20 min on most trains. It is the end of the Jeolla line, which also serves Jeonju and Suncheon. Most trains start at Yongsan, not Seoul Station, so check your departure station when you book. If you have a rail pass, see the Korail Pass guide. Yeosu Airport has flights to Gimpo and Jeju, and the passenger ferry to Jeju is suspended; see ferries in Korea.

In town, buses cost ₩1,600 with a transport card; cash is no longer accepted. Taxis are the quickest way between the station, downtown and Dolsan. The city’s Romantic Bus tours (₩10,000) cover Odongdo, Yi Sun-sin Square, Hyangiram and the fish market in one day from the station, which is handy if you have no car. The tourist information centre at Yeosu Expo Station is open 09:00–21:00, and the 1330 tourist hotline answers in English 24 hours a day.

For Geumodo, ferries leave from Yeosu’s coastal ferry terminal and from Baegya and Sinki ports. Times change every month, so check them with the operators or on the Korea Shipping Association’s island booking site, and bring your passport.

When to go

Spring and autumn are the best seasons. Camellias flower on Odongdo in February and March. Yeongchwisan’s hillsides turn pink with azaleas in late March and early April; the 2026 azalea festival was held on 28–29 March. The Geobukseon Festival, Yeosu’s big turtle-ship festival, filled Yi Sun-sin Square from 1 to 3 May 2026.

Summer is hot and humid, the beach season, and the time for pike eel. Autumn brings gizzard shad and cutlassfish, and winter is the season for oysters and egg cockles. The 2026 Yeosu World Island Expo runs until 4 November 2026 on Dolsan, so expect more visitors until then. For the rest of the south-west, see the Jeolla guide.

Frequently asked questions

Is Yeosu worth visiting?

Yes, for one night, if you want the sea and seafood. The evening is the point: the harbour lights, the cable car and the Romantic Pojangmacha tent bars. Add Hyangiram at sunrise and Odongdo by day. A day trip without the evening misses most of it.

How long is the KTX from Seoul to Yeosu?

About 2 h 50 min to 3 h 20 min from Yongsan to Yeosu Expo Station on most trains, with a few slower weekend services. Some trains start at Seoul Station. Yeosu Expo is the end of the line.

How much is the Yeosu cable car?

A return ride for an adult costs ₩17,000 in a standard cabin or ₩24,000 in a crystal cabin with a glass floor; one way is ₩14,000 or ₩19,000. Tickets are sold at the stations without reservation. On 11 and 25 November 2026 it opens only at 14:00 for inspections.

How do I get to Hyangiram by bus?

Buses 111, 111-1 and 116 run from the Yeosu bus terminal to Hyangiram. A few early 111 and 111-1 buses start at Yeosu Expo Station for sunrise; otherwise take bus 2 from the station and change to the 111 at Seogyo-dong Cathedral. Entry to Hyangiram is free.

What is the Romantic Pojangmacha?

A street of about 18 seafood tent bars under Geobukseon Bridge in the old harbour, open from 18:00. Cards are accepted. It closes on the first Wednesday of some months and in bad weather.
