Day Trips from Seoul: Suwon, the DMZ, Nami Island and More
Updated

The best day trip from Seoul for most first-timers is Suwon: about 30–40 minutes by Korail train, free fortress walls and no tour needed. Go to the DMZ if the border is why you came (Paju’s own tour is ₩9,200–12,200, closed Mondays, passport required), and to Nami Island for autumn trees. Facts checked 16 October 2026.
Each “day” below is a stand-alone trip that starts and ends in Seoul. Pick one or two for a 4–5 day stay, or do all five on a longer trip. All of them lie in Gyeonggi and Incheon, the region that wraps around the capital, except Bukhansan, which is inside the city limits.
Which day trip from Seoul should you pick?
| Trip | From Seoul | Tour needed? | Main costs (adult) | Closed | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Suwon Hwaseong | Korail 30–40 min from Seoul Station | No | Walls free; Haenggung ₩2,000 | Trolley Mondays | First-timers, history |
| DMZ (Paju) | Imjingak, north-west of Seoul | No, but most people book one | ₩9,200–12,200 | Mondays | The border, Korean War history |
| Nami Island and Gapyeong | ITX about 42 min from Cheongnyangni | No | ₩19,000 island; ₩11,000 garden | Open daily | Autumn colour, couples, families |
| Incheon Chinatown | Line 1 to the end of the line | No | Mostly free; sea train ₩11,000–14,000 | Museum and sea train Mondays | Food, a short or rainy day |
| Bukhansan | Line 4 and bus 120 | No | Free | Trail cut-off times | Hikers |
Avoid Mondays for the DMZ, Incheon’s museum and sea train, and Suwon’s trolley. Suwon, Nami Island and the Garden of Morning Calm are open every day, so they make the safest Monday choice.
Suwon: the easiest trip without a tour
Suwon is the capital of Gyeonggi Province, and its walled centre is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The fortress circuit, Hwaseong, was built in the 1790s by King Jeongjo, and you can walk the walls for free at any hour.
- Getting there: Korail trains from Seoul Station take about 30–40 minutes; book them like any KTX ticket. Subway Line 1 is cheaper and slower. From Suwon Station a city bus or taxi takes you to Paldalmun Gate.
- The walls: start at Paldalmun and climb Paldalsan for the best view, then follow the wall north. Allow 2–3 hours for the full loop with stops.
- The palace: Hwaseong Haenggung, where the king stayed on visits, costs ₩2,000 and is open 09:00–18:00 daily. A ₩4,000 combined ticket adds the Hwaseong Museum and the Suwon Museum.
- Night visit: until 1 November 2026, the Haenggung reopens 18:00–21:30 on Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays and holidays. The lit walls make it worth staying for dinner.
For what else to see, where to eat galbi and fried chicken, and where to stay overnight, see the Suwon travel guide. The palaces guide covers the royal sites in Seoul to pair with this trip. The Hwaseong Cultural Festival took place on 4–11 October 2026, so it has already finished for this year.
Adding the Korean Folk Village
The Korean Folk Village in Yongin, south of Suwon, rebuilds a Joseon-era village with craft demonstrations and shows. Foreign visitors who show a passport pay ₩22,000 for an all-day ticket through 2026; the standard adult price is ₩37,000 on weekdays and ₩39,000 at weekends. Buses 37 and 10-5 run there from Suwon Station Exit 4, and bus 1560 runs from Gangnam Station. Hours change by month, so check the official site before you go.
The DMZ: on your own or with a tour?
Paju City runs the DMZ Peace Tour from Imjingak, a park beside the Imjin River. A shuttle bus takes visitors through the military checkpoint to the Third Infiltration Tunnel, Dora Observatory and Unification Village, then back to Imjingak, in about three hours.
| Paju DMZ Peace Tour (on your own) | Guided tour from Seoul | |
|---|---|---|
| Price | ₩12,200 with monorail, ₩9,200 walking | Set by the operator |
| Getting to Imjingak | Your own transport | Hotel or central pick-up |
| Guide | None (no commentary on the course) | English-speaking guide |
| Booking | Korean-language site or on the day at Imjingak | Online in English |
| Closed | Mondays, weekday holidays, Seollal and Chuseok days | The tunnel and observatory close on Mondays for everyone, so Monday tours visit other sites |
- Passport: foreigners must show an original passport or alien registration card. Copies, photos and passports with an expired stay are refused.
- Sell-outs: only part of each bus can be booked online and the rest is sold on the day. Ticket sales close at 14:30 and often end early when departures sell out. Departures run from 09:20 to 14:40.
- Monorail or walk: the ₩12,200 ticket includes the monorail down into the tunnel, which reopened on 29 September 2026 after its old equipment was replaced. The walking route is a steep slope down and back up. People who are unsteady on their feet may be refused entry to the tunnel.
- Rules: photos and video, including drones, are banned on the whole course. Tours can be cancelled without notice for security reasons or bad weather.
Without a car, getting to Imjingak by public transport takes a train towards Munsan plus a bus or taxi, so many visitors choose a guided DMZ day tour instead. Tours that advertise Panmunjom or the JSA are separate products with their own restrictions, so confirm in writing that the JSA is actually included before you pay.
Nami Island and Gapyeong
Nami Island sits in the Bukhan River north-east of Seoul. It is a landscaped island of tree-lined avenues, and in late October and early November the ginkgo and metasequoia rows turn yellow and rust-red. See autumn leaves in Korea for this year’s timing.
- Getting there: the ITX-Cheongchun train reaches Gapyeong in about 42 minutes from Cheongnyangni or 1 hour from Yongsan. The Gyeongchun Line subway from Sangbong takes about 50 minutes.
- The ferry: Gapyeong Wharf is 1.5 km from the station, a 20-minute walk or 5 minutes by taxi. The ₩19,000 adult ticket includes the return ferry. Boats run every 10–20 minutes in the daytime, and the crossing takes about 5 minutes.
- Autumn hours: from 18 September to 22 November 2026 the first boat leaves at 07:30 daily, and the last boat runs at 21:30 on Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays and holidays (21:00 on other days).
- Zip wire: the alternative way onto the island costs ₩55,000–58,000 and includes island entry. Riders must be 140–200 cm tall and weigh 45–120 kg.
The Garden of Morning Calm is a hillside arboretum at the far end of Gapyeong’s tour bus loop. It is open every day from 08:30 to 19:00, and tickets (₩11,000 for adults) are sold only at the gate. Its lighting festival usually runs from early December to mid-March, with the garden open until 21:00 (23:00 on Saturdays); 2026–27 dates were not yet announced on 16 October. The ₩8,000 Gapyeong tour bus day ticket links the station, Nami Island, Petite France and the garden; buy it from the driver.
Incheon: Chinatown and the waterfront
Incheon is Seoul’s port city and the home of the main international airport. Its Chinatown dates from the treaty-port years of the 1880s. It is the easiest trip here to reach without any booking: ride Subway Line 1 to its western end at Incheon Station.
- Food: Chinatown is the place to eat jajangmyeon, the Chinese-Korean black-bean noodle dish. The small Jajangmyeon Museum (₩1,000) tells its story and is closed on Mondays.
- Open Port area: the streets behind Chinatown keep 19th-century bank and consulate buildings from when Incheon opened to foreign trade.
- Wolmi Sea Train: an elevated loop line to the Wolmido waterfront. Adults pay ₩11,000 on weekdays and ₩14,000 at weekends, and the ticket allows one re-ride the same day. It is closed on Mondays.
The Incheon city guide covers the rest of the city, from Songdo to Ganghwa Island. Incheon also works for a final half day: Incheon Airport is across the bridge to Yeongjong Island, so it fits before an evening flight if you can leave your bags at the airport or a station.
Bukhansan: a mountain inside the city
Bukhansan National Park rises on Seoul’s northern edge, and its granite summit, Baegundae (836 m), is the classic half-day climb from the city. Entry is free. Take Line 4 to Suyu and bus 120 to Ui-dong, then walk about 2 km to the trail support center. The climb takes about 1.5 hours up from there, and the final section has steel cables on bare rock. The Bukhansan page lists the trail cut-off times and both access routes, and the hiking guide covers other mountains near Seoul.
What to book before a day trip
- DMZ: either a guided tour from Seoul, or a Paju DMZ Peace Tour seat on the Korean-language booking site. On-the-day tickets go fast at weekends and in autumn. Other tours worth booking ahead, and the free ones, are in tours and activities in Korea.
- Nothing for Suwon, Incheon or Bukhansan. Buy train tickets on the day, or book Korail seats to Suwon for a Saturday or Sunday.
- ITX-Cheongchun seats for a weekend Gapyeong trip in October and November, when Nami Island is at its busiest.
- A T-money card with ₩20,000–30,000 on it. The T-money guide explains top-ups; the Climate Card does not cover trains and buses outside Seoul.

Swaps for rain, Mondays and the season
- Rain: Incheon is the best wet-weather choice, as Chinatown is compact and the sea-train cars are enclosed. Skip Bukhansan, since wet granite near the summit is dangerous.
- Monday: go to Suwon (walls and Haenggung open, only the trolley stops) or to Nami Island and the Garden of Morning Calm.
- Autumn (late October to mid-November): Nami Island and the Suwon walls are at their best; leave early, as weekend trains and ferries are crowded.
- Winter: the Garden of Morning Calm’s lights make Gapyeong an evening trip. Bukhansan needs crampons when the summit rock is icy.
- Longer trips: with 7 days, see Seoul, Gyeongju and Busan instead on the Korea in 7 days route, and give Seoul three days with the Seoul in 3 days plan.

Frequently asked questions
What is the best day trip from Seoul if I only have one day?
For most first-time visitors, Suwon. Korail trains take about 30–40 minutes, the fortress walls are free, and the whole trip works without a tour. Choose the DMZ instead if the border is the reason you came, and Nami Island if you want trees and a river.
Can I visit the DMZ without a tour?
Yes. Paju's DMZ Peace Tour sells individual tickets at Imjingak (₩9,200–12,200 for adults) with a shuttle bus round the Third Tunnel and Dora Observatory. Bring your original passport, avoid Mondays, and arrive early, as day-of tickets sell out. There is no guide, so many visitors still book a guided tour from Seoul.
Is the DMZ open on Mondays?
No. The Paju DMZ Peace Tour is closed every Monday, on weekday public holidays and on the Seollal and Chuseok holidays themselves. It can also be suspended at short notice for security threats or bad weather.
How much is Nami Island?
₩19,000 for adults, including the return ferry from Gapyeong Wharf. There is no separate foreigner price. The ferry crossing takes about five minutes and runs every 10 to 20 minutes during the day.
Can I combine Nami Island and the Garden of Morning Calm in one day?
Yes. Gapyeong's tour bus loop (₩8,000 for adults) links Gapyeong Station, Nami Island and the Garden of Morning Calm. Do Nami Island in the morning and the garden in the afternoon; the garden stays open until 19:00, last entry 18:00.
Do I need a different transit card for day trips?
Use a T-money card. It works on Korail Line 1 to Suwon and Incheon, the Gyeongchun Line and buses in Gyeonggi and Incheon. The Climate Card short-term pass covers only Seoul's subway and Seoul city buses.
