Nightlife
Updated
For a first night out in Korea, go to Hongdae or Itaewon in Seoul, or to Gwangalli Beach in Busan on a Saturday, when a free drone show runs over the bay. Plan the ride home before you start: on Saturdays, Sundays and holidays Seoul’s last trains leave before midnight, after which night buses cost ₩2,500 and taxis charge 20–40% extra.
Two rules decide the rest of the night: you must be 19 by Korean counting and carry your passport as proof, and Halloween weekend (30 October–1 November 2026) brings crowd controls to Itaewon and Hongdae. Transport fares, rules and hours below come from Seoul city, operator and tourism pages, checked on 27 October 2026.
Which area fits your night
| Your night | Go here |
|---|---|
| First night in Seoul, any budget | Hongdae: buskers, clubs and cheap bars, direct by AREX from the airport |
| Food from around the world, rooftop bars and pubs | Itaewon, Line 6 |
| Old-Seoul beer and snacks on plastic stools | Euljiro Nogari Alley, Euljiro 3-ga Station Exit 3 |
| A Saturday in Busan | Gwangalli Beach for the drone show, seafood and bars |
| A food-first evening, no bar | A night market: Kkangtong in Busan, Dongmun in Jeju |
| Not drinking at all | Night views from N Seoul Tower or a riverside picnic at Yeouido |
The short answer for most first-timers: book a bed near the area you will go out in. It turns the last-train problem into a short walk.
Getting home after the last train
The subway sets the shape of a night out in Seoul. On weekdays the last Line 2 trains run until about 00:45–01:00; on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays they finish at about 23:45–23:58. Many late trains end partway along the line, so check the last train to your station, not just from where you are. The Seoul subway guide has the details.
| Option | When | Cost | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Subway | From about 05:30 to about 01:00 (weekdays); to about 23:45 at weekends and on holidays | ₩1,550 with a card | Leaving before the last train |
| Owl bus (N routes) | First departures 23:10–00:00, last 03:10–04:10, every 10–40 minutes | ₩2,500 by card | Long rides home on a budget |
| Taxi | All night; surcharge 22:00–04:00 | ₩4,800 base fare by day, +20% or +40% at night | Groups, short hops, after 04:00 |
From Seoul Metropolitan Government transport pages (owl buses updated 20 March 2026) and Seoul Metro timetable data, checked 27 October 2026.
- Owl buses. Seoul runs 14 night-only routes with 140 buses; each number starts with N (for example N15 Ui-dong–Sadang, N26 Banghwa-dong–Sinnae-dong). Each route runs on its own timetable, so look up the route and the time at your stop in a map app before you leave the bar. Pay with a T-money card.
- Taxi surcharge. A regular taxi adds 20% from 22:00 to 23:00 and from 02:00 to 04:00, and 40% from 23:00 to 02:00. At the 40% rate the ₩4,800 base fare becomes about ₩6,700.
- Big nights. On Halloween weekend and Busan’s fireworks night, stations near the crowds may close exits or be skipped. Leave earlier, or walk a few blocks away from the crowd before looking for a ride.
Seoul’s nightlife areas
Hongdae
The streets around Hongik Univ. Station are Seoul’s student and indie-music quarter: buskers draw crowds after dark, and indie music venues, clubs and budget bars fill the side streets. Use Exit 9 for the main streets. The central walking street is car-free from Friday to Sunday, which is when it is busiest. The AREX all-stop train from Incheon Airport stops here, so Hongdae is also an easy base for a first or last night. See the Hongdae guide for exits and the Red Road.
Itaewon
Itaewon, on Line 6 below Namsan, is Seoul’s most international district: restaurants from around the world, rooftop bars and pubs on the slopes around Itaewon-ro, with narrower lanes such as the World Food Street behind the main road. It is also the area Seoul watches most closely at Halloween (see the box above).
Euljiro
By day Euljiro is a district of printing shops and hardware stores; by evening the shutters come down and the bars open. Its landmark is Nogari Alley, where plastic tables spill into the street and the classic order is cold draft beer with grilled dried pollack (nogari). The first pub here opened in 1980, and Seoul named the alley a Seoul Future Heritage site in 2015. It is about 90 m from Exit 3 of Euljiro 3-ga Station (Lines 2 and 3). Around it, newer craft-beer bars hide in the old buildings, which is why Seoul’s tourism office calls the area “Hipjiro”.
Gangnam, Seongsu and other districts
South of the river, the streets around Gangnam Station and Apgujeong Rodeo are going-out districts too: Seoul lists both among the eight areas it expects to be most crowded on Halloween weekend, with Itaewon, Hongdae, Seongsu-dong, Ikseon-dong, Myeongdong and the Konkuk Univ. food street. Seongsu and Ikseon-dong suit a cafe-to-bar evening.
Busan and other cities at night
Gwangalli Beach is Busan’s best night out for visitors. Seafood restaurants and bars face the lit Gwangan Bridge, and every Saturday the free Gwangalli M Drone Light Show puts about 1,100 drones over the water: 19:00 and 21:00 from October to February, 20:00 and 22:00 from March to September, with lasers added on the first and third Saturdays. Take Line 2 to Gwangan Station, about 10 minutes on foot. The Busan Fireworks Festival fills the beach on 7 November 2026.
Seomyeon, where metro Lines 1 and 2 cross, is Busan’s downtown, dense with restaurants and late-night streets and a good budget base; see where to stay in Busan. In Nampo, the Kkangtong night market runs every evening from 19:30 to midnight. Haeundae Beach is lit from sunset to midnight all year for a late walk.
Elsewhere:
- Daegu: Dongseongno is the city’s main shopping and nightlife street; the Seomun night market runs Friday and Saturday 19:00–23:30 and Sunday 19:00–22:30 until its season ends in December.
- Yeosu: the Romantic Pojangmacha, a row of seafood tent bars under Geobukseon Bridge, opens from 18:00; walk it off along the Jongpo waterfront.
- Jeju: the Dongmun night market in Jeju City opens every evening until midnight, from 18:00 in November–April.
Nights out without the bar
A night out in Korea does not have to involve a drink. These are free or cheap, and most run late:
- N Seoul Tower. The observatory opens until 22:30 on weekdays and 23:00 on Saturdays, Sundays and holidays; the lit tower itself is visible across the city.
- Yeouido Hangang Park. Open 24 hours, with marked zones where food deliveries can meet you for an evening picnic by the river.
- Gwangjang Market. The food alley serves until about 23:00 every day; see markets in Korea.
- Hongdae buskers. Free street performances, busiest on Friday to Sunday evenings.
- Seoul Lantern Festival. Lantern sculptures along Cheonggyecheon from 11 December 2026 to 31 January 2027; see winter in Korea and festivals.
Rules that apply on a night out
- Age 19, by calendar year. Under the Juvenile Protection Act you count as an adult from 1 January of the year you turn 19. Bars, clubs and shops selling alcohol must check age and identity and can turn you away if you cannot prove it. Carry your passport.
- No smoking indoors. Restaurants and cafés of every size are no-smoking inside, and vapes count. Smoking in a no-smoking area costs ₩100,000; use the marked smoking booths. More in etiquette.
- Crowds. Seoul’s advice for packed streets: check how busy an area is before you go, keep to the right, do not stop or turn suddenly, and leave as soon as you find yourself pressed against other people. If you drop something in a crowd, do not bend down to pick it up.
- Emergencies. Call 112 for police and 119 for fire and ambulance.
Tips for going out in Korea
- Stay where you party. A guesthouse or hotel in Hongdae, Itaewon or Seomyeon saves a taxi and the last-train rush; see guesthouses and hostels.
- Order food with your drinks. Korean pubs serve drinks with anju (drinking snacks), such as the dried pollack of Nogari Alley.
- Watch the weekend last train. It is about an hour earlier than on weekdays.
- Keep a card loaded. Owl buses and the subway take the same T-money card; top it up before the night starts.
- Avoid peak nights if crowds bother you. Halloween weekend (30 October–1 November 2026) and Busan’s fireworks night (7 November) are the busiest of the autumn.
