Dongmun Market is open every day of the year, including Seollal and Chuseok. Shops keep roughly 07:00–21:00, and entry is free. The night market by Gate 8 opens at 19:00 (May–October) or 18:00 (November–April) and runs to midnight, though stalls close early once they sell out.

Dongmun Market (동문재래시장) is the largest and oldest permanent market on Jeju, in the old centre of Jeju City, a short bus or taxi ride from the airport. It grew up in 1945 and today combines a covered traditional market, a seafood section, souvenir and citrus shops, and a nightly street-food market under one roof. Allow an hour for a browse, or two if you come to eat at the night market.

Day market or night market?

Most visitors come for one of two things: citrus and souvenirs by day, or a street-food dinner after dark. Both work on any day of the year, so pick by what you want to do.

Visit Jeju (Jeju Tourism Organization), checked 21 October 2026. If you only have one visit, come around the night market’s opening time: the day shops are still trading for a couple of hours, so you can buy citrus first and eat after.

A last stop before a flight works well too. The market is close to the airport, which makes it an easy place to buy citrus and boxed snacks on your way out.

What to buy and eat

The market sells almost everything a Jeju household needs, from grains, vegetables and fish to clothes and shoes. For visitors the draw is local produce and food:

  • Citrus. Jeju tangerines (gyul) are sold all year, with the varieties, taste and price changing through the seasons; hallabong, the knobbly-topped citrus, is the premium buy. Citrus juices and ice creams are sold throughout the market.
  • Rice cakes and snacks. Omegi-tteok and bingtteok, two traditional Jeju rice and buckwheat snacks, are the island specialities Visit Jeju names first.
  • Black pork. Dishes made with Jeju black pork are among the market’s best-known foods.
  • Seafood. The fish and dried-seafood sections sell the local catch, and Visit Jeju singles out snow crab gratin and snow crab croquettes as two of the market’s signature street foods.
  • Udo peanut ice cream. Ice cream made with peanuts from Udo, the island off Jeju’s east coast.

For the wider picture of what to eat on the island, see Korean food by region.

The night market

The night market is a permanent row of 32 stalls near Gate 8 that cook street food made with Jeju produce. It opens every evening of the year, and stalls close for the night once they sell out.

Two things changed in 2026:

  • Ordering by QR code and kiosk. Jeju Province introduced QR-code and kiosk ordering at the night market in July 2026, with separate options for eating on site and taking away, to shorten the queues.
  • Reusable dishes. From 23 July 2026 all 32 stalls serve eat-in food on reusable dishes, the first permanent night market in Korea to do so, according to the province. Take-away orders still come in disposable containers. Return your dishes where the staff show you.

The same month, the culture ministry and the Korea Tourism Organization held a campaign at Dongmun for their K-Tourism Market programme. The programme supports traditional markets popular with foreign visitors, and focuses on fixed prices, card payment, hygiene and service.

Stops and routes from the Jeju Bus Information System, checked 21 October 2026. The airport has several bus stops split by direction. Check in Kakao Map or Naver Map that your bus is heading into the city centre, and look up the next departure there too, because the official site does not publish a fixed timetable for these routes. A T-money card works on all Jeju buses. See buses in Korea for how they work.

By taxi, show the address 제주 제주시 관덕로14길 20. If you are driving, there is a public car park at the market, with the first 30 minutes free according to Visit Jeju.

Visitor tips

  • Pick a gate. With 12 gates it is easy to lose each other. Agree to meet at Gate 8, by the night market and the food alley.
  • Go early for the night market. Stalls close once they sell out, so the first two or three hours after opening give you the full choice.
  • Carry some cash. Small stalls and fruit stands may prefer cash, even though the market’s K-Tourism Market programme promotes card payment.
  • Citrus to take home. Buy citrus and snacks to eat on Jeju or take home. If you are flying abroad, check what fresh fruit your home country lets you bring in before buying a box.
  • Wheelchairs. Visit Jeju lists wheelchair loan at the market.
  • Walkers. The market marks the end of Jeju Olle route 17 and the start of route 18, so you may share the aisles with hikers. See the Jeju Olle Trail guide.

Around Dongmun Market

Dongmun is in the Jeju City district, the island’s main hotel area. The Sanjicheon stream and Tapdong seafront are both a short walk away and make an easy stroll before or after the night market. For a sunset first, go to Iho Tewoo Beach on the west side of the city and come back to Dongmun for dinner. Hamdeok Beach is the nearest big beach on the east side.

The Jeju guide’s three-day plan ends its west-coast day with dinner here, and the 10-day Korea itinerary visits on the day you fly in from Busan. For other night markets around the country, see markets in Korea. For where to stay and how to get around the island, see the Jeju guide and the Jeju region page.
