Jeongbang Falls costs ₩2,000 for adults and is open every day 09:00–17:50, with last entry at 17:30. It is a 23 m waterfall on the edge of Seogwipo that falls off a cliff onto the shore and into the sea. Allow under an hour. From the airport, the limousine 600 stops about 150 m away.

Visit Jeju calls it the only waterfall in Korea whose water falls straight into the sea. With Cheonjiyeon and Cheonjeyeon, it is one of Jeju’s three best-known falls. Since 2008 it has been a national Scenic Site (No. 43), officially named Jeongbangpokpo Falls in Seogwipo.

Is Jeongbang Falls worth a stop?

Stop if you are staying in Seogwipo or spending a day on the south coast. The visit is short and cheap, and you stand on the rocks at the foot of the falls with the sea behind you. Skip it if stairs are a problem: the only way down is a stairway of about five minutes, and Visit Jeju rates wheelchair access as very difficult.

What you see at the falls

  • The falls. Two streams drop 23 m from a dark cliff. Visit Jeju gives the falls as 8 m wide, with a pool about 5 m deep. The water starts on the southern slopes of Hallasan.
  • The cliffs. Vertical rock walls with columnar joints and old pine trees frame the falls on both sides. The view was counted among the ten great sights of old Jeju as “Jeongbang’s summer falls”.
  • The legend. Xu Fu (Seobul), sent by China’s first emperor to find a herb of eternal life, is said to have carved “Seobul passed here” on the rock. No such carving has been found.
  • The history. Sonammeori, the hill above the falls, is where many residents of southern Jeju were executed during the Jeju 4·3 Incident. Visit Jeju lists it as a 4·3 historic site.

The site has a public car park, toilets, a convenience store and a drinks stand by the entrance. The falls are also on Jeju Olle Trail Route 6, which runs through Seogwipo.

  • Wear shoes with grip. The viewing area at the bottom is on boulders by the sea, which can be wet from spray.
  • Pets. Visit Jeju says to phone 064-733-1530 to ask whether pets are allowed.
