Huinnyeoul Culture Village is a free cliffside lane of white houses and sea-view cafes on Yeongdo, open every day. Take bus 7, 71 or 508 from Nampo Station Exit 6 and allow about an hour. The information centre opens 10:00–18:00, but parts of the coastal path below are closed for works until 2028.

Huinnyeoul (흰여울) sits on the cliffs of Yeongdo, the island facing Busan’s old harbour. The village began as a refugee settlement during the Korean War. In December 2011 its empty houses were remodelled into an arts village. Today the draw is the setting: one narrow lane between the houses and a sheer drop, with dozens of cargo ships riding at anchor offshore. It is on Busan’s western side, a short bus ride from Jagalchi Fish Market and the Nampo markets.

Is Huinnyeoul worth the trip? Compared with Gamcheon

Most first-time visitors have time for one of Busan’s two “culture villages”. They are very different places.

Huinnyeoul Gamcheon
What you see A cliff-edge lane over the open sea and anchored ships Terraced pastel houses, murals and art installations on a hillside
Time needed About 1 hour, 2 with a cafe stop About 2 hours
Hours Lane always open; information centre 10:00–18:00 Residential alleys 09:00–18:00 under 2026 rules
From Nampo Bus 7, 71 or 508 from Nampo Station Exit 6 Village bus from near Jagalchi Exit 1
Walking Mostly level along the lane; steep stairs down to the shore Steep stairways off the main lane
Best for Sea views, sunset, a slow cafe stop Photos, art, the classic Busan hillside view

Choose Huinnyeoul if you want the sea, and Gamcheon if you want the art. With a full day on the west side, both fit with a lunch at Jagalchi in between.

What you do there

The village is one long lane, Huinnyeoul-gil, running along the cliff top, with 14 alleys and stairways dropping off it. A walk from end to end takes well under an hour at a slow pace.

  • Huinnyeoul Information Centre (194 Jeoryeong-ro). Pick up the village map here. The village archive on the ground floor screens interviews with residents and has a photo booth. There is a viewing deck and paid lockers on the 3rd floor and a cafe on the 4th. Open 10:00–18:00, closed on 1 January and on Seollal and Chuseok days.
  • The lane itself. Small cafes, craft workshops and independent bookshops sit between the houses, most with a window or terrace over the water. Opening hours and closing days vary from shop to shop.
  • Film locations. The village appears in several Korean films. The best known is The Attorney (변호인); the wall of the main character’s house is a standard photo stop.
  • The anchored ships. Large vessels waiting to enter Busan port drop anchor in the waters off Yeongdo, and the lane looks straight out at them. It is the view the village is known for.
  • Huinnyeoul Observatory and other small decks along the lane, for the view west across the water toward Songdo.

The name means roughly “white rapids”. It comes from streams that once ran fast down Bongnaesan, the hill behind the village, looking like falling snow. Locals also call the area “the second Songdo”, because it faces Songdo Beach across the bay.

The coastal path and tunnel: closures until 2028

Below the village, the Jeoryeong Coastal Trail (절영해안산책로) runs along the shore, reached by stairways and the Huinnyeoul coastal tunnel. Yeongdo-gu has been stabilising the slope under the village, and the works have closed parts of the shore since 26 December 2024:

Date What was announced
26 Dec 2024 – 31 Aug 2025 Coastal tunnel, piano stairs and part of the trail closed for works (Yeongdo-gu notice; the works then ran on)
From 15 Jan 2026 Partial opening, 09:00–16:00, closed in bad weather (Yeongdo Cultural Center)
July 2026 524 m of the 860 m path open, including the finished first section (Yeongdo-gu via Busan Ilbo)
May 2027 (planned) Second section done; about 684 m open
End of 2028 (planned) Last section done after a change of method on unstable ground

Checked 20 October 2026. For a visitor this means the village lane is unaffected, but you may not be able to walk the whole shore path or go through the tunnel. Check the signs at the stairways on the day. The January 2026 notice opened the available section only from 09:00 to 16:00, so go earlier in the day if the shore walk matters to you.

Getting to Huinnyeoul Culture Village

There is no subway on Yeongdo. Take Busan Metro Line 1 to Nampo Station, leave by Exit 6, and take a city bus across Yeongdo Bridge:

From Bus Get off at
Nampo Station Exit 6 / Yeongdo Bridge 6, 7, 9, 71, 82, 85 or 508 Huinnyeoul Culture Village (흰여울문화마을)
Busan Station (KTX) 82, 85 or 508 Huinnyeoul Culture Village

Routes from the Yeongdo-gu office and the Yeongdo Cultural Center, checked 20 October 2026. Visit Busan names the Yeongseon-dong Baengnyeonsa stop (영선동 백련사) for buses 7, 71 and 508, which also serves the village. A T-money card works on all of them. If you arrive on the KTX from Seoul, Busan Station is the easiest starting point.

By taxi, show the information centre’s address: 부산 영도구 절영로 194.

If you come by car, the public car park at the entrance to the Jeoryeong Coastal Trail (영선동4가 186-66) and the Sinseon 3-dong public car park are both charged. On weekends and public holidays, some roadside parking near the village is free during the day. Spaces fill fast at weekends, so the bus is easier.

Tips for visiting

  • Go in the afternoon for the light, but leave before dark. The lane faces west over the sea, so late afternoon is the classic time. Yeongdo-gu asks visitors not to come late in the evening, because people live in every house.
  • Be a quiet guest. Keep your voice down, don’t step into doorways, onto private stairs or rooftops, and take your rubbish with you.
  • Mind the stairs. The lane is mostly level, but the routes down to the shore are steep stairways, which makes them hard going with a stroller or wheelchair.
  • Combine it with Taejongdae. The cliffs and lighthouse at the southern tip of Yeongdo are further along the same island. Before the modern road was built, Huinnyeoul-gil was the only way there.
  • Wind and weather. The cliff top is exposed to the sea wind, and the shore path closes in bad weather.

A short history

After the Korean War broke out in 1950, refugees arriving in Busan built houses wherever there was space, including this strip of cliff above the sea on Yeongdo. Many of those houses later stood empty. In December 2011 vacant and run-down houses were remodelled to give local artists space to work and to bring culture into everyday life on Yeongdo, and the arts village took shape. Film shoots then made it one of Yeongdo’s best-known sights. The village describes itself as a community run together with its residents, and the Yeongdo Cultural Center runs its website and village archive.
