Jagalchi Market is free to walk around, open roughly 05:00–22:00 and closed on the 1st, 3rd and 5th Tuesday of each month. You pick live seafood on the 1st floor and eat it upstairs, where each restaurant adds its own table charge. It is about 6 minutes on foot from Jagalchi Station Exit 10 on Line 1.

Jagalchi is Korea’s largest seafood market and the classic first stop in Busan. It grew from fish stalls on the pebble beach of the old harbour (jagal means gravel), and swelled when refugees poured into the city during the Korean War. Today it has two parts: a seven-storey glass market building shaped like a gull in flight, opened in 2006, and the older lanes of stalls along the waterfront and the streets behind it. Allow an hour to look around, or two with a meal.

How buying and eating works

Most visitors come to eat raw fish (hoe) a few minutes after it leaves the tank. The system is simple once you know it.

Step Where What you pay
1. Choose your seafood 1st floor fish market The stall price for the fish or shellfish, by weight or by piece
2. Have it prepared The seller cleans and slices it Usually included; confirm before you agree
3. Eat it 2nd floor restaurants A per-person table charge, drinks, and extra for stew (maeuntang) or grilling

How the market’s two floors work, from the operator’s floor guide and Busan’s official tourism site, checked 7 October 2026. About 220 merchants trade in the building. Busan’s tourism office states only that service charges “differ by store”, so ask what the table and stew charges are before you sit down.

  • Agree the total first. Point at what you want, ask the price for that amount, and check whether slicing and delivery upstairs are included. A calculator or a phone screen avoids misunderstandings.
  • Prices are meant to be shown. In February 2026 the building’s operator and the merchants’ association ran a campaign against overcharging, asking every stall to display prices and origin labels. If nothing is displayed, compare two or three stalls.
  • Not up for raw fish? Ask for it grilled or cooked in a spicy stew, or look for grilled-fish and eel (kkomjangeo) restaurants on the 2nd floor and in the lanes outside.
  • Payment. The market operator says credit cards are accepted in the building. Carry some cash for the smaller outdoor stalls.

Hours, closed days and the 2026 festival

Hours Notes
Market (official tourism listing) 05:00–22:00 Shops keep their own hours
1F fish market (operator FAQ) about 05:00–21:00 Busiest in the early morning
2F raw-fish restaurants (operator FAQ) about 09:00–21:00 Sit down by 20:00
Rooftop observation deck 07:30–22:00 7th floor roof

Hours from Visit Busan (English and Korean) and the market operator’s pages, checked 7 October 2026. The two official figures differ by an hour at closing time, so treat 21:00 as the safe limit for a meal.

The fish market and restaurants in the main building close on the 1st, 3rd and 5th Tuesday of each month, and over the Seollal (Lunar New Year) and Chuseok holidays. The rest of October 2026 has one such Tuesday left, on the 20th; in November the market closes on the 3rd and 17th.

The Busan Jagalchi Festival runs from Thursday 15 to Sunday 18 October 2026 around the market, with an opening ceremony on the first day, stage shows, hands-on programmes and food stalls. Expect bigger crowds than usual on those days.

Change is coming to the waterfront stalls. A new hall for the market’s traditional street vendors, the Jagalchi Ajimae Market, has been built and was still allocating stalls in September 2026. The main building’s management passes from the merchants’ association to the city from December 2026, so check the operator’s site if you visit after that.

Getting there

Take Busan Metro Line 1 to Jagalchi Station (Exit 10) or Nampo Station (Exit 2); the market is about a 6-minute walk from either. From Busan Station, where the KTX from Seoul arrives, Line 1 toward Sinpyeong takes about 10 minutes. A T-money card works on the Busan metro and buses.

From Haeundae, take Line 2 to Seomyeon and change to Line 1. The address for taxis is 부산 중구 자갈치해안로 52. The building has an underground car park with 121 spaces, but Nampo’s streets are congested and the metro is easier.

Tips for visiting

  • Go early for the market, at lunch for the food. The fish market is liveliest in the early morning; the upstairs restaurants are in full swing from late morning.
  • Wear shoes you don’t mind getting wet. The floors and the outdoor lanes are hosed down constantly.
  • Go up to the roof. The observation deck looks over the harbour, Yeongdo Bridge and Yongdusan Park. Its “slow postbox” mails a postcard to any address, including overseas, six months later.
  • Check the calendar. If your only Nampo day falls on a closed Tuesday, swap it with Gamcheon or Haeundae Beach and come back another day.
  • Access. The building has lifts, accessible toilets and accessible parking.

Around the market

Jagalchi sits in the old harbour district of Nampo and Jung-gu, and most of its sights are close. Gukje Market and BIFF Square are each about 5 minutes on foot, and Yongdusan Park with Busan Tower about 10 minutes. Yeongdo Bridge, Korea’s only lifting bridge, is a 5-minute walk east. Songdo Beach and its sea cable car are a short ride west on city bus 7, 26, 71 or 96 from Exit 1. For more of the city and day trips, see the Busan region page. If you liked the food here, Seoul’s Gwangjang Market is the capital’s best-known market for eating; markets in Korea compares the main markets and night markets by city. For what to eat in each city, see the Korean food guide.
